HISTORY: The history of the "Arti" observatory began in 1836 when the first scientific department in the Urals - the "Ekaterinburg" magneto - meteorological observatory was organized in Ekaterinburg. The decision on organization of the observatory was made by the Russian Academy of Sciences according to the proposal of A.Gumbolt, approved of by K.Gauss.

The scientific tasks of the observatory were observations of the Earth magnetic field and meteorological investigations.
In 1885 G.F.Abels was invited to head the Ekaterinburg observatory and worked at it all his life (1846-1929). His son R.G.Abels (1886-1978), born in Ekaterinburg, also devoted his life to the work at the observatory. G.F.Abels, R.G.Abels, Z.G.Weis-Ksenofontova andI.K.Silina made the most valuable contribution to the development of the observatory and scientific geophysical investigations. They laid down the basis of magnetometric, seismologic and meteorological observations.

In 1932 the observatory changed its location due to appearance of intensive industrial noises as a result of the start of tram traffic in Ekaterinburg. The observatory moved to Kosulino and was named "Vysokaya Dubrava". Here it operated till 1973. In 1969 a new magnetic observatory, which became a successor of the observatory "Vysokaya Dubrava", started its operation in the settlement "Arti". The transfer of the observatories was accompanied by special observations and investigations of geomagnetic field variations which allowed to realize correct succession of investigations.

Since 1969 and up to date the observatory has been successfully operating in the s. "Arti" and it bears the name of this ancient Urals settlement.
